Start Date: 2017-06-13
End Date: 2017-07-13

Director:
Miguel A. Aguilar, M.A. (ma.aguilar112@uniandes.edu.co)
Universidad Nacional Santiago Antúnez de Mayolo (Huaraz, Peru)

Presentation:
The Project will be focus in the recently discovered Ushnu-Inca Pyramid at the ancient Inca town of Pueblo Viejo de Recuay, located at 30 minutes from the city of Huaraz, Ancash..
After one year of research, we found in the site the evidence of a unknown Inca Pyramid structure by using drones and aerophotogrametry techniques as well as other field techniques. The importance of this discover was covered by the press around the world both in english and spanish.

This discover changed the vision of the Inca conquest in the region, developed between 1470 to 1532 a.C., during the period known as Late Horizon. There is an outstanding cultural and natural landscape that surrounds the site and the town of Recuay (see link here).

Ushnus are terraced pyramid structures that researchers believe were used by ancient local Inca, rulers during some of their most significant ceremonies in which they drank and gave liquid offerings to the gods. Research indicates they also may have been used for astronomical observations, though that will be corroborate in this field school season.

The experience of the participant will be also in the study of ancient structures such Kanchas and kallankas as well as other features of Inca architecture. In addition, we will focus in the connection of the site with the great Inca Road system, also known as The Qhapaq Ñan, declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 2014 (See link here).

Objectives of the Field Season
The project is focused on three aspects of research in the field and laboratory:

1 Archaeology. Participants will be trained in excavation of different areas of the site in a monumental architecture context, and will be trained to to define different sectors and structures functionality and recognize architectonical and archaeological features.

2. Archaeometry . Participants will be trained in the developing of a georreferenced map of the site using a GIS Geodatabase. Different techiques will be iused, such Total Station, aerophotogrammetry with the use of drones, and traditional field drawings.

3. Laboratory. Participants will be trained in analysis of ceramics, lithic and human remains from the site excavations and surveys. The bone analyses are performed in order to obtain biological data from the remains recovered by students themselves during the current season.

4. Archaeological Preservation: Participants will be trained in the evaluation and diagnostics of the conservation status of the site structures and will develop theoretical and practical strategies for it preservation.

5. Community training program: This section will be focus in the educational training of local guides and will be in cooperation with the local government institution. The main objective is to develop the formation of local guides in order to encourage the sustainable preservation of the site and a clean economy based in a community tourism.

All the participants in the team will rotate between different parts of research so that everyone gets to try everything. However, if a participant chooses to work only in one area, it will be considered depending on skills and progress of the student.
